Benefits of Bamboo

We live at an exciting time in the history of the Earth, when our capacity for invention and construction is finally coming to terms with our natural world. Gone are the days when humans set out to recklessly conquer our planet in every endeavor, from medicine to living spaces. Instead, we have recognized the consequences of taking shortcuts with our planet and are striving to reconcile our natural industriousness with the planet’s ability to provide.

That struggle can be seen within the niche of home and office décor. More and more people are concerned about how the products they use to add character and practicality to their homes impact the planet. As such, we are seeing materials which are certified green being used more and more in everyday applications.

One of these materials, and the one which has seen the largest increase in popularity, is bamboo. Once only know to Westerners as the material that Giant Pandas eat, bamboo today is recognized all over the world because of its vast potential. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of bamboo.

Many uses

Despite bamboo’s newfound fame, many people don’t realize that in fact there are dozens of different species of bamboo. Even the aforementioned Giant Panda may switch the type of bamboo it prefers several times over the course of its life!

As bamboo comes in many different styles, so too does it have many different applications in today’s society. It is used in the creation of linens, as well as for furniture such as massage tables and dining room chairs. And of course, it’s still a popular selection for those looking for hardwood flooring. In fact, bamboo is so diverse that in Japan and other eastern countries, it is not only relied upon to support body weight during a massage, but is used as industrial scaffolding as well.

Strength

That last use should indicate to you the second in our list of bamboo benefits, and that is the strength of the material. While it can be (obviously) be digested by the panda and other animals, processed bamboo is one of the strongest materials out there. This strength usually comes from the interweaving of many different bamboo fibers, to make a strong end product.
