How to Make your Own Blend of Aromatherapy Oils

Aromatherapy combines the relaxing and calming experience of a massage with the healing benefits of essentials oils.  You don’t need to buy too many oils; usually for a successful blend you need about 5 essential oils and one carrier oil to dilute the concentrated oil mix.

Before going shopping for essential oils, you need to educate yourself first on the properties of essential oils, as some are calming and relaxing, others are rejuvenating, yet others have additional healing properties.  Also not all oils go well with each other, and if you happen to mix together two oils that do not mix well, you will not enjoy the smell of what is rubbed all over your body.

Once you know which oils you want to use, you need a carrier oil which will dilute your blend.   Our organic massage oil is a great carrier oil.   It is a perfect blend of Sunflower Oil, Safflower Oil, Olive Oil and Jojoba (ha-ho-ba) Oil. Our oil is used by many massage therapists on their own, without the addition of essential oils, because carrier oils make perfect massage oils.

To make your aromatherapy blend, here are a couple of pointers on which fragrances go well with each other.  Floral smells go nice together with citrus or woodsy oils.  For relaxing properties, lavender, chamomile and vanilla are your perfect blend. If you want to feel uplifted and full of energy, use a mixture of peppermint, lemongrass and eucalyptus.

No matter which oils you combine together, you need to remember to dilute them properly in the carrier oil.  For each 1 ounce of carrier oil you should add 10-15 drops of essential oils. Once the oils are properly mixed with the carrier oil, it is best to store them for one day in a dark (usually a blue or brown) bottle, as the true fragrance does not get released immediately.  So to really enjoy the blended smells, use the new oil blend for a massage the next day.

Here is a typical aromatherapy massage oil recipe I personally like.  It is used to sooth and rejuvenate tired muscles and tissue after a hard day at work.

I have tested it and it’s truly delightful on the skin as well as your nose.

Add 4 tablespoons of carrier oil

13 drops of lavender essential oil

5 drops of peppermint essential oil

2 drops of rosemary essential oil

4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

You first add the carrier oil to the bottle and then add one by one the essential oil drops. My personal preference is to shake the bottle after adding each type separately to briefly check for fragrance.

Once you start mixing your own blends for massage, your creativity will take you a long way and you will soon get a sense of what you can and cannot mix together.
